Recipe in the Guardian

I've been a big fan of Felicity Cloake's Perfect column for the Guardian ever since it started. more...

Guardian recipe search

For the non-British readers, The Guardian is a British broadsheet newspaper with a liberal lefty bias. As an added bonus for overseas readers like me, all their content is available free online.

Anyway, political affiliations aside, The Guardian, and its Sunday sister The Observer are home to some of my favourite food writers, including Nigel Slater, Yotam Ottolenghi and Allegra McEvedy. I can't count the number of times I have been inspired to cook something by a recipe I saw in The Guardian.

So I was excited to read this week that they have just launched a proper recipe search of previously published articles. There are a lot of recipes in there, going back for over ten years. (A quick test search for "chocolate" yielded 174 total hits, including recipes from 1999 and 2001, although the majority seem to be from 2003, or later - presumably the time that The Guardian started to put so much more of its content online)

What's different about this search function is that as well as searching for a recipe by name (e.g. chocolate cake) you can also search simultaneously for ingredients to both include and exclude (e.g. include chocolate, eggs, sugar; exclude flour). You can also narrow your results to show only vegetarian recipes.

I haven't put this thoroughly to the test as yet, but it looks like its going to be a pretty good online resource. If, like me, you like to get inspiration and recipes by browsing, I definitely recommend you try it out.
